Founder / Owner

I have been in love with the water since I was 4 years old, and I was a competitive swimmer for many years.  I swam all the way through college, earning a scholarship to UCLA which afforded me many opportunities.  I worked as a Senior Training Officer/Lifeguard for LA County for 17 years.  I retired with a full captain status from the county to pursue additional avenues.  Through my many mentors and former coaches, I learned I not only loved to compete in the water, but I had a true passion for educating others.  I continued my education earning a Master’s in Adaptive Physical Education.  After my time with the county, I finally retired and opened a swim school teaching the basics of water safety.  This swim school is now known as Aquatic Safety Instruction, LLC founded in 1978. On an average we run 700 students of all ages through our instructional programs and over 1800 campers through our Aquatic Management partnership with local camps.  Also, I speak at the United States Swim School Association on the subject of adult drowning prevention in addition to sitting on many cases in the capacity of an expert witness.

Our training is rather non-traditional.  I learned early on that to be well prepared to compete both mentally and physically that cross training was essential.  I was introduced to yoga, Pilates, in water weight training and endurance walking. We believe that in order to reach our potential we need to choose a healthy lifestyle.

Hey all, my name is Brandon. It has been a pleasure and so much fun working with Aquatic Safety Instruction these past years. I was born and raised right here in Los Angeles and am the oldest of three. Ever since I could remember I loved being in the pool. Starting in elementary school, I joined the first swim team that my school offered and continued swimming throughout middle and high school. I then found a passion for Water Polo and played on the team during my high school years. I absolutely loved being on a team, and creating a strong relationship with my teammates and coaches. I started my professional career as a lifeguard and found a huge passion for teaching people of all ages how to swim, be safe, and comfortable with the water. Swimming is such a great skill that I think everyone should have. And my philosophy in presenting water safety to students of all ages is not only a passion of mine but in alignment with Coach Treci’s teaching philosophy, “to teach is to learn twice”. Water safety is a skill that I believe everyone has the ability to gain, and during my lessons, I work to listen and learn from my students so that I can cater my teaching strategies and curriculum to each student’s benefit.

I have always loved the water and have grown up around it. Through my time of surfing and early morning swims, I have come to both respect the water and find peace in it. It’s tranquil yet always brings a smile to me. And there’s nothing better than just going swimming and enjoying the beauty. Through my time surfing, I’ve come to have a lot of respect for it and make sure I’m safe, and the people around me are safe. Such as knowing how to swim, knowing the conditions, understanding the risks, and how to prevent injuries or worse. Working with children is something I’m passionate about and have done multiple times. I used to volunteer for Chai Lifeline to work with kids after school, and this past summer, I was a camp counselor in Oregon. Every minute of working with kids is interesting, but it’s always fun.
